Sylvan Senior Center members were recently gifted an anonymous donation of $10,000+. This donation, in addition to five other previous anonymous donations of similar amounts, and the many grants and other private donations, portray the giving spirit of so many supporters of local projects. Some of the Senior Center’s gifts have come from people still in the Sylvan Grove area; and some are from friends and supporters who have moved away but still hold the town, community, or historical buildings dear to their hearts. The excitement felt each time volunteers receive words of encouragement or monetary donations cannot be described. Such support provides both financial and emotional encouragement to spur projects toward completion.
Senior Center members and their friends have been busy this past month finishing up outside work on the building. Members have repainted the old Farmers Elevator Co. lettering, the interior and exterior of the Great Room windows, the capstones above and below the south windows, and the base of the elevator scale area. The contractors have almost completed the aluminum front facade and the drywall. Windows for the south side and northwest corner have been ordered, as well as the large glass door for the courtyard area on the east side. The elevator scale window reconstruction is set to be started soon, and the courtyard construction should be in process within a week. Interior doors, concrete floor staining, kitchen cabinets and plumbing and lighting fixtures are still on the to-do list. Senior Center members will take on the task of painting the drywall.
Donations are still needed to bring this project to completion. If you have the means and the heart to help out, your support will certainly be much appreciated. Donations can be mailed to Sylvan Senior Center, Inc., P.O. Box 34, Sylvan Grove, KS, 67481, with checks written to Sylvan Senior Center, Inc.
Senior Center members are also asking for photos of the elevator exterior or photos of the elevator in use. Within the front meeting rooms and the community Great Room, SSC members may display pictures from the past to portray the rich history of the elevator and the rural agricultural lifestyle. SSC members have been busy planning events for seniors as well as for the community as soon as the building is finished, events that will engage both young and old and make this new space a vital and cherished part of the community.
