If you’ve been a student in USD #298 any time in recent history, or had a child enrolled, you know Shari Pittenger. Lovingly known as “Pitt” to many, Pittenger spent decades in Lincoln working with children as their physical education teacher. What some may not know is that she was an outstanding athlete in her youth.
As a member of the Class of 1984 Washburn University’s Lady Blues, Pittenger had a very successful college career in basketball and was named Defensive Player of the Year.
The class of 1984 was the first women’s team to win the CSIC and District 10 championship, going on to the National tournament. She and her teammates also played AAU basketball following graduation.
Pittenger and her teammates were recognized at half-time during a match-up between Washburn and Emporia State Saturday, March 2. The Lady Blues won the game by 1 point in overtime “I was proud to be part of a great team and legacy!” she said.
