Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Monday of May each year. Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12 this year and is a time to honor mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers for their contributions to family and society.
Why do we celebrate the mothers in our lives? There are a million reasons.
A mother is traditionally the parent who kisses boo-boos and makes them go away. She instructs her children during daily interaction. Sometimes she even home-schools her offspring! Traditionally she prepares the meals, packs the lunches and reminds us not to forget our backpacks. Dads do many of these things as well, and they have their own special day in June.
A mom will rock us when we’re tired or distraught. She will dry our tears, scold us when we are unkind, and teach us how to clean our rooms.
A mother endures discomfort and pain during pregnancy, labor and delivery to give us life. She will rock us all night if we have colic. She gives their own bodies to nourish ours. Even Super-dads can’t do that.
Don’t restrict your honor to Mom, Grandma or Great-Grandma. Include all the mothers in your life as well as anyone who has filled that role for you. Without mothers, we wouldn’t be here, and all mothers deserve a special day.
