Annette Wiles, originally from Hunter, KS and a Sylvan Unified High School graduate, will soon be able to add an important credential to her resume when she is inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

While a student at Fort Hays State University (FHSU), Wiles became the all-time leading scorer in the history of FHSU Women’s Basketball in 1991, producing 2,407 points over her four-season career, and remains the only player in the program’s history to score over 2,000 points. She was a key player in the Tigers 1991 National Championship with a 34-2 record, the only national title in the program’s history. Also in 1991, the Tigers were Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions.

Wiles college basketball career was remarkable. She was a two-time All-America selection and named Most Valuable Player of the 1991 NAIA Tournament. In her senior year, she scored a single season record of 880 points, averaging 24.4 points per game. Additionally, she set the three highest single season scoring averages in the program’s history. She also set a single season school record in rebounds.

Wiles averaged more than 20 points per game during her four-year career with the Tigers. She set the program’s career rebounds record with 961 while also setting records for field goals, field goals attempted, field goal percentage, freethrows made, free-throws attempted and blocked shots. She holds many of those records to date.

She was inducted into the FHSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000 and is also a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. She enjoyed a lengthy career as a women’s college basketball head coach amassing over 400 wins with a career mark of 409-227 (.643), while coaching seven years at Bethany College, eight years at FHSU and seven years at Minnesota Duluth. She was twice named Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year and twice named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. She led three teams to NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2005 at FHSU, 2010 and 2012 at Minnesota Duluth, and led Bethany College to four NAIA national tournament appearances.

Wiles is currently Director of Hummer Sports Park in Topeka. She made the decision to move back to Kansas from Minnesota to be closer to family. She was the Athletic Director at Topeka High School (TPS) and TPS District Administrator before moving on to Hummer Sports Park.

In a video produced by Topeka Public Schools, Wiles said she is both honored and humbled to be one of the 12 inductees to the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame this year, sharing the status with such famous athletes as Dean Smith, James Naismith, Jackie Stiles and Lynette Woodard.

“It’s a proud and humbling moment,” she said.
