Riding for Suicide Awareness

In today’s world, almost everyone has been touched by suicide at some point in their lives, if not in their own family, in the families of their friends or coworkers. Often, upon learning of a suicide a common reaction would be “But he/she seemed so happy!”

In today’s world, almost everyone has been touched by suicide at some point in their lives, if not in their own family, in the families of their friends or coworkers. Often, upon learning of a suicide a common reaction would be “But he/she seemed so happy!”

In order to bring awareness to the increasingly more common issue of suicide, Sara Voyles of Norwich, KS is riding her horse across Kansas from Nebraska to Oklahoma following K-14 to promote awareness of suicide prevention.

To explain her mission, she posted on her Facebook page, Riding for Suicide Awareness.

“I am a survivor of suicide loss,” she wrote. “My son Hunter took his life in August of ‘21, he was only 17 and a high school senior. His death has damaged me and my family in ways I never knew were possible. For those who have experienced a suicide loss I want to support you and I would love to make it so no one else joins the club I am a part of. With my ride I hope to bring awareness to suicide and help end the stigma that surrounds it.”

From Superior, NE, Sara visited, or will visit, Mankato, Jewell, Beloit, Lincoln, Ellsworth, Lyons, Arlington, Kingman, Rago, Harper, Anthony and Manchester.

Sara went through Lincoln County September 8, at least entered Lincoln County on that date. There was a mishap with her portable corral just north of Lincoln that slowed her down a little bit, however, she made it to south of Lincoln by evening. Sunday, the 10th, found her in Lyons, right on schedule.
