NCK Raptors Compete in 4th Race at Snake Farm Showdown
The NCK Raptors travelled to Snake Farm north of Lawrence, KS for the fourth race of season three of Kansas NICA’s mountain bike race series held May 7th. The Snake Farm trails offer a mix of single track cut through the limestone hillside and wide-open swaths that twist through the tall grass prairie.

Production nears for Sod and Stubble
Those attending the Chamber’s May 17 What’s Up luncheon will hear from Lucas resident, historian Von Rothenberger. Rothenberger will share information about the movie Sod and Stubble that is set to go into production during the summer/ fall of 2023 and will be filmed in Downs.

Big Kansas Road Trip Location Announced for 2024
On the last day of the 2023 Big Kansas Road Trip in Jewell, Republic and Smith counties, Marci Penner of the Kansas Sampler Foundation announced that the 2024 Big Kansas Road Trip (BKRT) will take place in Ellsworth and Lincoln counties plus the community of Lucas on May 2-5, 2024.

There are lots of fun activities planned at the Lincoln Carnegie Library this summer. Children, teens and adults can sign-up for the summer reading program which runs from May 19th through July 29th. Sylvan speech takes state title
Sylvan Lucas Unified’s Speech and Drama Team captured the state championship after competing with 35 other schools at the 1A State Championship in Hutchinson on Saturday, May 6th. The Sylvan squad finished the day with 350 points; Pretty Prairie came in second with 285 points and South Central High School was third with 274 points.

AREA DANCERS MAKE A SPLASH AT COMPETITION
Students of Post Rock Dance Academy, LLC participated in the Edge National Dance Competition held April 21-23 in Wichita, bringing home many awards for their talents. Among those putting their talents on stage were Bella Anderson, Adam Cooper, Mallie Florence, Molly Heller, Sydney Heller, Kaylee Johnson, Charlee O’Bannon, Kaylee Obermueller, Hannah Pahls, Hadley Reagan, Teryn Spear, Braxtyn Stertz and Belle Wehrman. The students received several awards including first place for lyrical solo, first place for lyrical group dance, first place for tap duet, second place for lyrical solo and fourth place for jazz group dance. An award for Best Technique was presented to the Lyrical Group Dance, out of 300 competing dances. The Lyrical Group also received first runner-up for the highest point total in the intermediate category out of 100 dances.

Lincoln County students faired well at the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge
The Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge (KEC) is sponsored by the Kansas Masonic Foundation and Kansas Masons in partnership with Kansas State University (KSU) and the Network Kansas Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) Series. The annual program provides holistic business support for young entrepreneurs that are Kansas high school or university students and includes a business idea competition involving financial prizes to launch startup businesses.

County takes the lead at Forensics League Championship
Lincoln County high school students showed their talents on April 5 at the NPL League Championship competition. The Sylvan Speech and Drama Team placed first with 142 points and captured 1st place in 6 out of 9 events, making them league champions! The Lincoln team placed second place with 76 points. On the USD 299 team, Individual league champions are Keeli Knobbe in Humorous Solo; Anna Feldkamp in Poetry; Jacob Schultz in Prose; Kaylee Johnson in Oration; Addie Wallace in Serious Solo and Molly Heller in Information. The team had a total of 23 medalists. In Humorous Solo, 1st place Keeli Knobbe , 2nd place Jacob Schultz, 3rd place Layne Buttenhoff, 6th place Harlan Pancost. In Poetry, 1st place went to Anna Feldkamp, 5th place to Harlan Pancost; In Prose, 1st place Jacob Schultz, 2nd place Anna Feldkamp, 6th place Goldie Dohe; in Oration, 1st place Kaylee Johnson, 2nd place Sydney Heller, 3rd place Goldie Dohe, 6th place Harlan Pancost; in Serious Solo, 1st place Addie Wallace, 2nd place Sydney Heller, 3rd place Molly Heller, 6th place Hannah Pahls; in Informative, 1st place Molly Heller, 2nd place Kaylee Johnson, 3rd place Keeli Knobbe; in Duet, 2nd place Keeli Knobbe and Addie Wallace, 3rd place Valden Dohl and Harlan Pancost; in IDA Isaac Schultz and Layne Buttenhoff.
