Gelbvieh cattle head to auction
Two hundred bulls and female Gelbvieh (Gel-fee) cattle are heading to the Post Rock Cattle Company’s annual auction Feb. 25. Leland Clark, senior partner in Post Rock Cattle Company, said between the DNA testing, the Genomic Enhanced Expected Progeny Differences, and ultrasound technology they use on their cattle should give people confidence the breeding bulls they are purchasing are top quality. A list of prestigious awards presented in the past few years also validates the quality of the company’s resident sires. They won seven banners in the American Gelbvieh Foundation Scale and Rail contest and had two resident sires awarded the Grand Champion Pen of Carcass Value Steers, Probity in the Balancer division and 32F9 (Roy) in the purebred division. This brings to four the number of resident herd sires to have achieved that honor.

Senate District #36 has over $1.3M in unclaimed funds
Feb. 1st is marked as National Unclaimed Property Day, and the Kansas State Treasurers’ Office says there is quite a bit of money left unclaimed in Kansas. “Our office currently holds more than $500 million in unclaimed property for Kansans,” Kansas Treasurer Steven Johnson said in a news release. “It is estimated that one in 10 people nationwide has unclaimed property – so it’s worth checking regularly to see if you, your family, or friends have funds available to claim. The news release says the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) estimates that nearly 33 million people in the United States have unclaimed property. This amount could be in financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for a number of years. When the company cannot locate the owner, the assets are given to the state. Some of those assets could be unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, safe deposit boxes, and unused rebate cards. It is free for Kansans to search for and claim unclaimed property, and the news release says to be wary of third-party individuals offering to assist in filing claims for a fee. While some operate legally, there are also bad actors who use the promise of assistance as a hook for scams. Feel free to call my office in Topeka to check for your name or visit https://www. kansasstatetreasurer.com.

Sweetie Pies for your Sweetie Pie
The months of January and February are often slow months in the retail business. No one wants to go outside when Mother Nature brings Antarctica to our town. Some of us are still broke from Christmas. It’s often a stretch to figure out something fun to do to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Home finds a new home
While not a nomadic culture, Americans are not afraid to move. They might move in favor of a more suitable house. They might move to accept an exceptional job opportunity. They might move to be closer to family members. Others might move to take advantage of certain amenities. Obviously, it is far easier to move ourselves than to move the mountain, so to speak, but some people refuse to take the path of least resistance. Eddie and Julie Flores are two of those people.
