Hometown Helpers Community Club
The Hometown Helpers Community Club had a full summer of work and play. After a June rocket building meeting and rocket launch in Hutchinson, KS, they held a business meeting in July. They met on July 8, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Sylvan Grove. The meeting was called to order by President Jacob Schultz. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the Hometown Helpers pledge and motto. Chaplain Parker Reagan introduced Scripture verse Proverbs 3:5 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. Adelyn Dohl led the club in singing “Hello, Muddah, Hello Faddah” and “I’ve Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy Down in my Heart.”

Advance directives – more important than you might think
No one wants to think about dying. Some find it frightening. Some find the thought of not being with family and friends very sad. Some just want to believe they will live forever.

Raid on Marion County, Kansas, newspaper shows why would-be tyrants fear journalists
It would be easy to view Friday’s police raid on a rural Kansas newsroom as another sign Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plan for world domination is not the only threat to our democracy. It appears to violate the Privacy Protection Act, which explicitly protects materials journalists collect in the course of their work from fishing expeditions by authorities.

Pepper recipes abound for whatever might pop up
If you have read this column for any length of time, you know that I am, in no way, a gardener. Despite that, I still follow a Kansas gardening group on Facebook, and I love seeing the posts of beautiful gardens, weird plants and bugs that show up in people’s yards and discussions about how to keep everything alive.

Back to School, Back to School, Here We Go Back to School.
Here it is, August. Summer has flown by and already there is Halloween candy roaming the shelves of Walmart. For most of us, August also brings the normal adjustment of transitioning back to the school year. It is normal for this to look differently for everyone, especially depending upon the age of your child. You may find yourself stressing to find the school supplies list, supporting your youth through two a day practices for athletic season or looking forward to getting back to the routine of the school year.

Kyne House Museum hosts meet and greet
The Meet and Greet at the Kyne House Museum was a hit Saturday evening for everyone who stopped by the museum to meet the board and new director Dana Walters. Walters and the board have been working hard to create events the community – even those who are not history buffs – would enjoy. Above, Don Wagner entertained visitors throughout the evening. Ice cream was served at no charge. (Photo courtesy of Dana Walters)
